The Benefits of Daily Physical Activity for Seniors

By August 30, 2013Archives

Daily physical activity is important at any age, but they are especially important for people age 65 and older. Exercise of any kind and brain training keep you feeling happier and more fulfilled, which allows you to live longer. Having a zest for life is proven to prolong it.

In a study conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the National Cancer Institute in 2012, it was shown that someone who walks 150 minutes per week, the amount of exercise recommended by the federal government, will add 3.4 years to his or her life expectancy. A lesser workout of 75 minutes per week would add 1.8 years. Seniors who are active are also more likely to live longer without a disability because they will have worked their muscles, strengthened their bones, and kept their organs healthy, which is beneficial in the event of a fall. The following are some of the reasons why daily physical activity is important for seniors.

Physical Activity

  • Boosts mental wellness.

Regular exercise has been proven to relieve anxiety, depression, anger, and other serious emotions that can eventually lead to health problems. Physical activity also increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, which directly affects mental acuity and memory.

  • Improves physical wellness.

Activity also enhances your immune system, which decreases your risk of developing serious diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

  • Reduces risk factors.

Exercise can lower your blood pressure and increase your levels of good cholesterol.

  • Prolongs your optimal health.

A sedentary lifestyle allows the body to lose stamina and strength, and its overall ability to function well. For each hour of regular exercise you perform, you will gain about two hours of life expectancy.

Daily exercise, even if it is something as simple as taking a walk, has numerous benefits to your overall physical and mental health. Mental exercise, such as the exercises mentioned above or even playing mental development games, has the ability to improve your mood and outlook on life. Once you make it a priority to fit physical and mental activities into your daily routine, you won’t ever want to return to a sedentary, mentally inactive lifestyle.
