Healthy aging lifestyle modifications for seniors

By September 28, 2012Archives

For the senior population, practicing a healthy lifestyle and making smart health choices can make an enormous difference in daily life. There are several lifestyle changes that seniors and their caregivers can make in order to lead the most healthy and active life possible while growing older.

Diet and Exercise

Routine exercise and a healthy diet can have one of the largest overall impacts when it comes to seniors and their general well-being. Seniors face many different health challenges as they age. However, many of these diseases or conditions can be prevented or slowed as a result of practicing consistent healthy exercise and diet. For example, osteoporosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression, arthritis, dementia and even certain cancers are just a few of the common diseases and conditions which seniors can control by using diet and exercise.

In addition to a healthy diet and exercise commitment, several other senior lifestyle modifications can lead to healthy aging. The following lifestyle modifications are vital for those seniors and their caregivers working to achieve healthy aging:

  • 1. No drinking alcohol, or limiting alcohol intake to one drink each day
  • 2. No smoking or use of tobacco products
  • 3. Using sun block and skin moisturizers each day
  • 4. Practice a thorough oral health routine each day, brushing/flossing at least twice daily
  • 5. Working hard to keep seniors proactive in their own life and health decisions
  • 6. Keep all visits to primary healthcare doctors and specialists
  • 7. Review list of daily medications with seniors and their physicians several times per year
  • 8. Follow through with all physician recommended tests and health screenings
  • 9. Keep visiting a dentist at least one time per year
  • 10. Keep all appointments with eye and foot specialists, especially for seniors who have diabetes
  • 11. Keep to a regular sleep routine
  • 12. Enjoy social activities on a regular and steady basis
  • 13. Seniors should also have regular family interaction, enjoying quality time together
