Finding the Right Skilled Nursing Facility for Your Loved One

By September 9, 2013Care Planning

One of the most important decisions you will ever be faced with is choosing the right Skilled Nursing Facility for a loved one. You’ve likely heard horror stories about the bad ones and you definitely don’t want to place a beloved family member in harm’s way. In order to find the right facility for your loved one, follow the basic steps below.

Create a List of Possibilities

The first step toward finding the right Skilled Nursing Facility is to start out by making a list of possible nursing facilities in your area. You can do this pretty quickly, especially if you live in a small town. Start by talking to your loved one’s doctor and asking for recommendations. Ask the physician which facility he or she would feel comfortable admitting their own mother/father.

Next, you can do an online search of facilities in your area. This is especially important if you live in a large city, as there are likely plenty of Skilled Nursing Facilities in your area. Do a little research on each facility’s website, look at photos of the rooms and read reviews from family members. This will give you valuable insight into the facility and its employees.

Finally, you can add or remove facilities from your list by talking to your friends. Word of mouth travels fast, especially when it comes to nursing facilities. Ask around and see what you can find out about the facilities you are considering. Get some feedback from people who have been there first-hand.

Utilize the Power of the Internet

One of the fastest ways to compare Skilled Nursing Facilities on your list is to use online resources. For example, Nursing Home Compare is an online and government sponsored tool that will help you find and compare nursing facilities in your area. You can search by name or location. It also lets you compare the quality of individual facilities. You’ll find quick and reliable information that details: how each facility scored on its most recent state health inspection, staffing data specific to that facility, quality care measures and fire safety inspection results. You’ll also see how many stars each facility has been awarded on a 0 to 5 star scale.

Seeing is Believing

When you’ve narrowed your list down to a handful of Skilled Nursing Facilities, it’s time to make a phone call to each one. You’ll want to speak with the facility coordinator, then let them know you would like to arrange a visit to tour the facility. While photos online are helpful, they often don’t do the facility justice. Seeing with your own eyes can help you to make a decision and feel good about it, especially if your loved one seems to enjoy the tour.

Sharing is caring!
