Easy Home Modifications to Help Safely Age in Place

By October 25, 2013Archives

Safety is the number one issue for any senior living independently. That means home modifications should be made to accommodate special needs such as mobility, balance and limited range of motion. Without taking the proper precautions, many seniors ultimately experience falls within the home or suffer from devastating injuries. Implementing some easy home modifications is one of the best ways to ensure a senior has safe and unlimited access within his or her home.

According to a study conducted by the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), more than 83 percent of older Americans want to live out their lives at home. The hurdle facing many of these people is that their home isn’t designed to be user friendly. Luckily, there are some small and effective home modifications which make independent living safe for seniors. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Make sure all appliances are in a location that allows for easy accessibility
  • Mark control knobs with color-coded tape or white-out, ensuring seniors can clearly see them
  • Set the hot water heater temperature to a level that is comfortable, not scalding hot
  • Check to see that heating and cooling thermostats are easily accessible
  • Anchor appliances to the floor to prevent overturning
  • Take up every rug in the home to prevent falls
  • Install an assistance rail in the bathtub for balance and support

  • Purchase long-lasting light bulbs and make sure each room has adequate light
  • Install automatic nightlights in dimly-lit or dark areas of the home
  • Check to see if there are enough electrical outlets throughout the home
  • Properly ground each outlet to prevent an accidental electric shock
  • Remove any extension cords that may pose a fall risk

Other Ideas

  • See that smoke detectors are installed in each room of the house and test to make sure they are working properly
  • Make sure a phone is located in every room that the senior spends time
  • Prevent dangerous falls by gluing 1” horizontal strips of sandpaper to each stair that is uncarpeted
