New LivHOME Podcast: Advance Directives

Filed under: Podcast — LivHOME @ 1:09 pm

Darlene Mann, a LivHOME Care Manager in Southern California, discusses the issue of advance directives. She addresses a number of topics including the difference between a living will and a durable power of attorney, what caregivers and care managers can do to assure that advance directives are in place and accurately reflect the senior’s wishes, and tips on raising the issue of advance directives with seniors.

Creating advance directives involves having an open discussion so that everyone understands what the senior wants, while allowing him or her to maintain control — even during a medical emergency.

Attending to a Senior’s Body and Mind

Filed under: Care Manager Connections — LivHOME @ 3:39 pm

Overseen by a LivHOME Care Manager, a well-developed program for seniors can enhance self-esteem and improve a senior’s quality of life.

Don Mueller, MFT, CMC, worked with one 90-year-old woman to address her physical and emotional well-being. He not only saw to her medical needs but provided emotionally supportive activities such as reminiscence therapy and even a regular movie outing to a local electronics store.

Once the woman regained her self esteem, she learned to smile once again and endeared all around her.

As Independence Day approaches, Steve Barlam, MSW, LCSW, CMC, Chief Professional Officer of LivHOME, discusses the idea of independence as an aspiration for seniors. He explains just what seniors mean when they say they want their independence, and points out that what they actually need is interdependence. Steve offers advice for family members seeking to introduce this idea and explains that there is a lesson in this for all who serve as caregivers and friends to seniors.

Don’t Forget Mother’s Day!

Filed under: In The Community — LivHOME @ 3:05 pm

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, and for seniors this holiday can have special significance.  If you’re still scratching your head wondering what to get Mom, here are a few last-minute ideas.

  • Get something she wouldn’t spend money on herself, like having the windows cleaned.
  • Order a nice meal. You can even do it online at places like Omaha Steaks.
  • Pictures are always a big hit and help seniors stay connected.
  • Flowers never get old.

The key is this — keep things simple.  Large crowds or elaborate plans can be overwhelming.

It’s the sentiment that counts.
